There’s a reason these air fryers have only increased in popularity over the last few years, and it’s recipes like this that mean you can enjoy deliciously crispy fried chicken with a lot less oil and a little less guilt! Replicated from Gordon Ramsay’s hit TV show “The F Word” currently streaming on Amazon Prime, this fried chicken recipe is your ticket to deliciously tasty and fresh comfort food.
Ingredients
(Serving size of 4)
For this recipe you’ll need:
- 4 free range chicken thighs
- 4 free range chicken drumsticks
- 500 ml buttermilk
- 2 tsp of chopped garlic
- ½ a brown onion
- Spray olive oil for cooking
- 300 g plain flour
- 1-2 tsp smoked paprika
- 1/2 tsp garlic powder
- 1-2 tsp cayenne pepper
- 1 pinch salt and pepper
- 1 tsp of hot sauce (or more if you like it spicy!)
Instructions
Preparation - 15 minutes
Total cooking time - 60 minutes
To create the marinade, pour the buttermilk into a large bowl and add shallots, garlic, onion and a good pinch of salt and pepper. If you’re looking for a spicier option add your choice of hot sauce as well!
Next add your chicken to the marinade until completely coated.
Mix well. Cover and chill for at least 30 minutes, or overnight (this will make the chicken incredibly tender). Be sure to bring it back to room temperature before cooking.
Put the flour on a plate and mix with the spices and a pinch of salt and pepper.
Remove the chicken pieces from the buttermilk, then dip in the flour, making sure all the sides are coated. It helps to leave the chicken to rest in the flour for a couple of minutes to really soak up any excess moisture. Note: This recipe only recommends one coat of breading. Air fryers won’t cook the chicken as well if it’s double breaded. If you’re wanting even more crunch, you might want to consider using the traditional oil in the pan method.
Preheat your air-fryer to 180 degrees. Once warm, spray with cooking oil before placing the breaded chicken into the fryer basket (you’ll need to do it in batches).
Fry the chicken in a single layer, for 14 minutes before flipping, spraying oil and cooking for a further 10 minutes. Hot Tip: During the air frying process, if you pull out the chicken and notice any dry flour spots on the chicken, spray those spots lightly with oil. The breading will never crisp up if it doesn’t have a tiny bit of oil to hydrate it. It will just burn.
Drain on kitchen paper and serve with baked vegetables and mashed potatoes.
