Product review: Huawei Honor watch magic smart watch

The Huawei Honor Watch Magic Smart Watch is a smartwatch that works on both Android and iPhone. For this review, I connected it to my iPhone and found it worked well, with only minor connectivity issues.

It’s a lightweight watch that’s slim and waterproof for up to 40m (5ATM), making it the perfect watch if you don’t want to take it off whilst you swim. It has many health monitoring features including heart rate, stress level and sleep. If you need to monitor your blood pressure it does that too!

For those that are active or want to stay on top of their physical activity output, the watch monitors your workout, calories burnt and heart rate, and transfers that information to the Huawei Health app.

When it comes to the look of the watch, there are a few display faces that you can choose from to suit your style. You can also swap the bands with a range of colours available at GearBest.

Another feature I found helpful was the “find my phone” function, which came in handy when I misplaced my phone. It also has a flashlight built-in that provides a decent amount of light.

The watch displays text messages and notifications from apps such as Instagram, Facebook and WordPress. It vibrates to alert you to messages, notifications and of course incoming calls which has a decline option if you can’t take the call at that time. However, a feature that I found was missing from the watch and Huawei app was that you can’t control which notifications you receive. Meaning, if you have multiple apps sending you notifications, you’ll receive them all to your watch. This can be a little annoying because your watch will vibrate with each notification.

Keeping the watch up to date with the latest software releases is important to its functionality. The watch will automatically advise of any available software upgrades, so you’ll always have the latest software available.

There were a few minor issues that I found with the watch. Initial setup was a bit tricky as the manual provided is Chinese and the instructions on the phone when first switched on were also Chinese. After I downloaded the Huawei Health app, it was easy to set up as the watch’s programming flicked over to English. I still had to however work out which QR Reader barcode I had to scan to do this (not too tricky as there are only two options but again instructions were written in Chinese).

I also found that when the Bluetooth disconnected due to the proximity of the phone to the watch, I needed to go back into the app and reconnect it for features like the weather to update.

These were only minor issues that did not impact the overall functionality of the watch. The value of the watch is good as it’s easy to use once you get past the initial set up process. It’s perfect for anyone because you can customise its look to suit your style, and its various features mean you don’t need separate gadgets to monitor your fitness. The watch also comes with two colour options of black and silver (like the one reviewed).

If you don’t want to spend a lot of money on a smartwatch but want one that offers multiple functions and is comfortable to wear, then the Huawei HONOR Watch Magic Smart Watch is a great substitution.
